What is an MCS-150?
The MCS-150 is a form required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) used for motor carriers to register and update their U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) number company record.
The basic information required in your MCS-150 includes, but is not limited to:
- USDOT Number
- MC Number
- Carrier Mileage
- Legal Business Name
- Type of Company Operations
- Cargo Classification
- Number of Vehicles
- Driver Information
How Often Does an MCS-150 Need to be Filed?
The FMCSA requires that all motor carriers update their MCS-150 every two years. Additionally, any changes to the company’s operations must be updated in the MCS-150 promptly.
An MCS-150 Must Be Updated After Any Changes to:
- Legal Business Name
- DBA (Doing Business As / Trade Name)
- Business Addresses
- Truck Count
- EIN/SSN (When Incorporating from SSN to EIN, if applicable)
- Phone Number
- Company Structure (LLC, Corp, Sole Prop)
- Operation Type
- Cargo Classification
- Fleet Size or Mileage
If you need to reactivate a DOT Number that was inactive, out of service, or voluntarily revoked an MCS-150 must be filed before operating.
An update is often required or strongly recommended after safety audits, insurance reinstatements, and/or DOT investigations to avoid any issues or compounding of potential penalties.
When is the Deadline to File the MCS-150?
The due date for filing an MCS-150 is different depending on the carrier, and companies must submit their filings on time. The deadline is dependent on the last two digits of your USDOT number.
What are the Penalties for Inaccurate or Missed Filings of the MCS-150?
Failure to file your MCS-150 on time can result in the immediate deactivation of your USDOT number, making it illegal for the operations of your commercial motor vehicles to continue. Civil penalties are also typically imposed, with fines ranging from $1,000 to $10,000.
Regardless of whether your company has made updates to the information or not, the MCS-150 must be filed biennially.
The number one reason carriers fall out of compliance with regulations is that they fail to renew their MCS-150 by the deadline.
